BREAD Devotional Journal
The BREAD Journal is Reality San Francisco’s take on a Lectio Divina, a guided and contemplative way to read scripture. It has roots back to the early centuries of the Christian Church and was established as a monastic practice by Benedict in the 6th century. Reality SF’s take features a guide on using the book and a reading plan that takes you through specific scriptures throughout the church year.
Process, Pattern, Formation: For this year’s BREAD, the visual theme revolves around a spiritual practice that progresses through a process, pattern, and formation. It emphasizes space and texture to allow for more clarity and less distraction.
Lines and shapes, alongside organic and textural elements like graphite, paint, or paper, help outline the BREAD practice (Be still. Read the text. Encounter God. Apply what you have heard. Devote your day to God.) while creating more breathing room and space for movement and imagination, encouraging anyone using the journal to use it as a tool for contemplation and prayer.
